Wi-Fi

The principle is simple but technically revolutionary.

Square Mile install a carrier grade wireless network in each marina enabling any Wi-Fi compatible device to connect to the network.

Antennas bounce the signal around the marina enabling computers to pick up the signal and surf the internet.

This is identical to any other Broadband Internet connection but has no wires attached

Enabling your laptop, PC or MAC

If your current hardware does not display the Wi-Fi or Intel Centrino branding, an external device can be purchased to enable your equipment.

Whilst in-built and Centrino work very well, they may fall short of the requirements of exposed environments like marinas.

In these cases, Square Mile recommends Smartbridge ethernet adaptors.  In our experinece, these are the best on the market.  They are mains powered but also run off a 12v supply, plug directly into the ethernet port on your equipment and result in an extremely reliable and consistent signal quality.

In exceptional circumstances, an extended antenna can be added to these.  The antenna measures about 2"x3" and can be mounted anywhere outside on your boat.

What's a hotspot?

A Hotspot is an area where you can use broadband without wires.

We recognise that there are many standards of Wi-Fi. 802.11b is the longest established and most recognised standard used in public Hotspots.

Getting technical?

Operating on the 2.4GHz radio spectrum and developed by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) 802.11b has bandwidth of 11 Mbps – ideal for net surfing, email and streaming audio.

Most systems including Intel Centrino Mobile Technology and Apple Airport use 802.11b.

802.11g has a maximum bandwidth of 54 Mbps and also operates in the 2.4GHz frequency. This is more costly but allows for streaming video and the ability to run multiple PCs simultaneously. This is more commonly found in the office environment.

It is commonly misconceived that 802.11b is slower than 802.11g, but for Internet surfing, you really will notice no difference as the speed is goverened by the Internet connection that we supply to the marina.

802.11a is a different standard for wireless LANs operating in the 5GHz frequency range with a maximum bandwidth of 54 Mbps. However, this has a much shorter range.

Regardless of the maximum bandwidth available for each standard the speed experienced by the end user is entirely governed by the connection into the Hotspot
