Is Windows Vista compatible
with wireless networks?
the short answer to this
is yes, but there are some known issue with the Vista platform working
within Wi-Fi networks. if you are experineceing difficulties,
we would advise you to search the Microsoft website or Google for
Wi-FI issues Vista
What equipment do I
need?
You need nothing more
than your existing laptop, PC, MAC or any Internet ready device.
Most Wi-Fi enabled computers
will connect seamlessly, although do be aware that Standard PCMCIA
cards and some internal wireless devices can prove to be less successful
in providing such a reliable connection in marinas. This is
due to their lack of sensitivity and range.
This issue can be solved
using an external wireless device.
These can be purchased
from any high street store; we urge you to spend as much as you
can justify as you really do get what you pay for.
We have chosen Wireless
Pro as our partner for providing our own dedicated marine wi-fi
client device, due to their extensive experience in supporting wireless
communications in challenging environments.
The Wireless Pro support
team will be happy to provide any advice and support you may require
on these products.
The Marine
WiFi Booster has helped many of our customers dramatically improve
their connection in a wide range of situations.
The device is equipped with up to 13Mtr USB cable for easy connection
to your laptop or on-board PC.

How do I know if I
have a Wi-Fi enabled laptop?
Somewhere
on your computer, there will be a Wi-Fi symbol or Intel Centrino
Mobile technology branding:

What do I do next?
I have a Wi-Fi enabled
computer...
Whilst at the marina,
look in your network connections for the SSID - Square Mile.
Connect to this network. Turn off your dial-up connections
and browse to the Internet. You will be greeted with the
marina home page that allows you to sign up for a new account
or enter your username and password to browse immediately.
I do not have a Wi-Fi
enabled laptop...
We can advise you on
enabling your computer. This advice has been built on 4
years experience providing wireless Internet access in this extremely
exposed environment. Standard PCMCIA cards to date have
not proved as successful in operating in marinas. This is
due to their lack of sensitivity.
Square Mile recommends
external wireless adaptors.
These can be purchased
from any high street store and we urgent you to spend as much
as you can justify as you really do get what you pay for.
Call one of our team
on 01628 539 451 to discuss your requirements.
Do I need a mobile
phone to connect?
No, this is a completely
different technology to 3G and Bluetooth - this provides faster,
more reliable and much cheaper access to the Internet.
Why did Square Mile
offer a free service?
This was a promotional
period to increase user numbers and was funded by the marinas' themselves.
With the massively increased
user numbers registered at the end of this promotional period, the
cost of the service for 2006/07 has decreased dramatically.
Which marinas offer
this service?
A full, up to date list
of these can be found at our locator
page.
MDL do not currently offer
the Square Mile service although they do offer Wi-Fi, however, this
does mean you need 2 subscriptions, 1 to access MDL sites and one
to access all other marinas.
If I subscribe, can
I use the service in other hotspots?
Yes. Square Mile
offers you access to Wireless Broadband in many thousands of hotspots
around the world, for further information visit www.bozii.net
How fast and secure
is the connection?
This will depend on the
level of service you choose.
Generally you will experience
speeds in line with your home broadband, that’s 10 or 20 times
the speed of dial up.
Of course, connection
speeds can depend on the number of concurrent users at any one time
as with any network environment. However, as soon as a slowing of
network connectivity is measured, bandwidth will be increased.
Security is paramount.
Square Mile users are exposed to no more risk than any other Internet
access.
This Internet access is
similar to that of any other service provider and therefore your
personal firewall software and anti-virus features should be all
be enabled on your device.
Windows XP has these
options built in but firewall software is widely available for users
on other operating systems.
We cannot enable full
WEP encryption as we are unable to guarantee the wireless device
that our customers will use
Do I need an antenna
on my boat?
In most cases no; however,
for some heavy users, or users on the very outer limits of the marina,
you may need an external antenna.
Will the movement of
the boat affect connectivity?
No, but do bear in mind
this is an extremely exposed environment that experiences dramatic
humidity, temperature and physical boat movement changes that can
affect the signal quality. This should not affect your surfing
experience.
Why not use a mobile
phone to connect?
This service allows permanent,
high-speed access to the Internet and allows use of your mobile
'phone at the same time. Mobiles offer a comparatively slow
means of connecting to the Internet with uncontrollable costs leaving
you unable to make and receive calls.
Will the signal interfere
with other radio equipment on my boat?
No - there are no reports of this to date
from our many thousands of users .
